Kronau’s history

Kronau is a hamlet about 28 kilometres south-east of Regina on Highway 33, in the Rural Municipality of Lajord No. 128. The area was first settled in the late 19th and early 20th century by German-Russians from near the Black Sea and by German-Americans who came from the northern United States.

Two heritage sites tell part of that story. Bethlehem Heritage Cemetery, also known as the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery, was established in 1896 and was listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places in 1985.

About 12 kilometres east of Kronau stands St. Peter's Church and Grotto at St. Peter's Colony. The Catholic church was completed in 1904 beside a cemetery established in 1892. Father Henry Metzger, a noted artist, built the grotto in 1917, and it became a pilgrimage site. He also painted the Stations of the Cross in the church. The site was added to the Canadian Register of Historic Places in 2010.
